NR sponge is the most natural of all the sponge rubber types, given that it is made from natural rubber (also known as para rubber). Because it is made from natural rubber, this material has the best mechanical properties of all sponge rubbers. Even after frequent compression, it will continually return to its original shape. Its excellent mechanical properties mean that it is very durable. It is a soft, elastic, open-celled material enclosed in a skin. Because we only convert this type of sponge rubber into rolls at EKI, the skin will only be present on the upper and lower surfaces. The skin is cut off on the sides, which means that NR sponge is not completely watertight. Another disadvantage of sponge rubber made from para rubber is that it is less resistant to the effects of UV radiation and ozone. It is also only moderately resistant to ageing, but it does last longer than other materials when used a lot at low temperatures. The material is not flame retardant, but it is resistant to alkalis. NR sponge can be supplied in blue, grey and black, either in sheets or converted to rolls. These are available in many different hardnesses.
NR sponge can be used in a variety of areas, mainly when a material is needed that has very good mechanical properties. This can include technical applications, as well as in the food industry, such as for the cleaning and rinsing of potatoes or the labelling of wine bottles. It can also be used as die-cut filling material. NR sponge can also be used to absorb vibrations in storage areas.
