FKM rubber is also known as Viton rubber or fluoro-rubber . Viton is the commercial name for FKM rubber, and was registered by DuPont in 1957. This rubber is a fluoropolymer (fluoroelastomer), which is a polymer whose molecules contain fluorine atoms. The main property of this high quality rubber is its excellent chemical resistance, including resistance to solvents, acids, alkalis, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and oxidants.
It has good mechanical properties that remain intact even at temperatures up to 250°C. As a result, it easily returns to its original shape after compression. Viton rubber also has electric insulation properties and provides good heat resistance. The material resists wear, has a long lifespan and resists ageing well. In addition, FKM rubber is difficult to ignite and has a high specific mass . Viton rubber resists oil, grease and fuels such as petrol, diesel and kerosene, and is resistant to steam, water and other liquids.
Due to its chemical resistance, Viton rubber is highly suitable for heavy industrial applications and for this reason is widely used in the chemical and petrochemical industry, such as in factories. The material is also used in the automotive sector, as well as in the aviation, aerospace, gas and oil industries. FKM rubber has additional applications in refineries, steel factories and the food industry. The high chemical resistance of Viton rubber means that it is widely used to make O-rings, hoses and gaskets. The O-rings and hoses (including fire hoses) are commonly found in the automotive sector. Another application for FKM O-rings is in scuba diving. FKM rubber can be used both indoors and outdoors thanks to its UV and ozone-resistant qualities.
Nijmegen-based manufacturer EKI can supply you with high-quality FKM rubber (Viton rubber) products in both standard and custom sizes.
