Orange Sponge

Orange sponge is made from natural rubber and has good mechanical properties and a high degree of elasticity as a result. This material absorbs liquids effectively. It comes in a range of densities and hardnesses and is widely used to make vacuum pads.

    Properties of orange sponge

Orange sponge is made from natural rubber. This orange foam rubber is valued for its good mechanical properties; it can be compressed frequently and will always return to its original shape. It is therefore a very deformable, highly elastic material. Unlike a number of other foam rubbers, natural foam rubber is not waterproof; in fact, it absorbs liquids very well. The material is much like a sponge in this respect, although it has a closed cell foam structure rather than being sponge rubber. It is poorly resistant to weather conditions, so is not very suitable for outdoor purposes. It does have good resistance to tearing, however, thanks to its elasticity. Orange sponge is available in a variety of hardnesses and densities ranging from fine (the cells are very close together) to coarse (the cells are further apart). This makes it a very versatile material for a wide range of applications requiring different hardnesses or densities. EKI converts this foam rubber from blocks into a variety of shapes that can be custom-made in different thicknesses. Self-adhesive versions are also available.

    Orange sponge applications

The versatility of this material means that it has a wide range of applications. For example, it is used to make vacuum pads, and when formed into a ball, it can be used for cleaning pipes. It is also used in concrete pumps in this shape, as well as for cleaning milking machines in the livestock industry. Orange sponge is also used as a pressure roller in labelling machines. Thanks to its spongy properties, the material was formerly used for sticking postage stamps. As you can imagine, anyone who had to stick many stamps would not be enthusiastic about having to lick them all, so a piece of orange sponge dampened with water was used instead. The back of the stamps was pressed to the sponge to moisten them for sticking to postal items. Because the material was so good at absorbing water, it remained damp for a long time, making it ideal for this purpose.
